As part of the PhotoESPAÑA 2021 festival, Casa de América is hosting a photographic exhibition by Marilene Ribeiro from 10 September to 10 October which addresses the social consequences of hydroelectric infrastructures. A gallery that was the winner of Discoveries at PhotoESPAÑA 2020.

Ribeiro’s images are a graphic report on areas affected by major civil works in Brazil. More specifically, it highlights the adverse effects on many families in three different regions of the South American country who lived on the river banks, which have been flooded by the construction of dams for hydroelectric purposes.

Born in Belo Horizonte (Brazil) in 1976, Marilene Ribeiro is a Doctor in Creative Arts from Brighton University (United Kingdom) and has a Master’s Degree in Ecology, Conservation and Wildlife Management from the ECMVS /UFMG Postgraduate Programme (Brazil). Her work usually addresses issues related to human rights, nature, identity and documentary reports.

She is a member of the Biotropic Institute, a Brazilian non-governmental organisation that is concerned with the conservation of biodiversity, and the Fast Forward - Women in Photography group, an association of female photographers that seeks to promote the work of women in photography worldwide.

She also collaborates with the Voices of Latin America initiative, directed by the Latin America Bureau-LAB, which supports the fight of social movements against development mega-projects, violence and the gentrification of urban areas.
