Throughout a decade, the Fado Festival has clearly established itself as one of the most prestigious vehicles for the international dissemination of fado, attracting the attention of an increasingly numerous public to the great contribution of Portugal and its culture to the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as it was officially recognized by UNESCO, in 2011.

Once again, this song, which was born just over two centuries ago in the poor neighborhoods of the Lisbon port, has demonstrated its unique ability to transmit, even today, the identity of a country and, at the same time, reveal the essential universality of the Portuguese identity and arouse deep emotions even in the public and the most distant communities. In fact, fado manages to speak of a specific historical and social reality - which is that of the country with the oldest borders in Europe and which soon laid the foundations for intercultural dialogue between Western civilization and the other cultures of the world - by time that manages to reach, through affections and emotions, the most human and universal of those who listen to it.

In 2020, the year that commemorates the centenary of the birth of Amália Rodrigues (1920-1999), the greatest exponent of fado of the 20th century and the fadista who has contributed the most to the poetic and musical renewal of the genre, as well as to its recognition International, the Fado Festival, within the framework of its tenth anniversary celebrations, could not fail to honor the living memory of this exceptional artist.

It will do so, as usual, with a series of conferences, exhibitions and film screenings, but above all with the presence of a group of important fado players from several generations who will bear witness to the enormous contemporary vitality of fado and the dynamism with which it it continues to be able to be faithful to its roots, but also to dialogue with all the music of the world and to find new paths that make its history even bigger. The vital energy of contemporary fado is also the celebration of Amália's immortal legacy.
